DECEMBER 2006

The call came into RME and just three short weeks later this school was brought up to date with a high efficiency heating solution.  We are fortunate that RBI can deliver their boilers within 10 days of order (typical).  In this case, one of two existing cast iron sectional boilers had cracked and was leaking.  We evaluated the overall condition of the boiler and atmospheric burners with Gardiner Trane and both of us concurred that it was in the best interest of the school system to replace the boilers and not repair them.

Working closely with Miller Plumbing and Heating, they were able to pull one of the old boilers out leaving the other firing so the building would retain it's heating.  Later, after the RBI's were up and running, the second old boiler was removed and the custodian was happy to have some space back in the mechanical room. The RBI Futera II boiler is an 85% efficient unit with little if any stand by losses.  Because of it's small size, we were able to fit both boilers on a single pad with primary secondary piping carefully designed by Gardiner Trane. The Futera II unit is ANSI category I so we were able to reuse much of the venting and the chimney keeping the installation prices in check.

Since the old boilers were atmospheric, we knew the fuel savings impact of the RBI boiler combined with energy controls designed and supplied by Gardiner Trane would quickly begin to payback the school system.  Atmospheric boilers do not typically meet current emission standards and suffer a substantial energy loss.  Most manufactures have limited or eliminated atmospheric boilers from production, however, some still offer atmospheric pitching the 'simplicity' of this type of boiler.  The problem is, while combustion efficiency on an atmospheric boiler may be rated at 80%, the stand by losses of these unit are expensive and substantial.  The vents are bigger and every time the unit shuts down, a natural flow of air carries heat from the boiler right up the over sized vent.  In effect, the 'simple' atmospheric boilers become a huge radiator to the outdoors.  While the birds may appreciate it, this customer will appreciate that we recommended units with little or no stand by losses at all!

RBI also boast of a newer and improved control and cabinet design.  Finished about 2 years, this design has been fairly problem free and the set up is highly regarded by service tech's across Ohio (see below).  Gardiner Trane employs certified RBI tech's as does 17 other companies in Northern Ohio.  No boiler is better supported and it is also owned and operated by a 550 Million Dollar corporation in Mestek.

Below you can see that the Futera II also comes with optional stainless steel jackets and these units are being commissioned by our own RBI certified expert...Ryan Slaby.  Notice how open all the components on the RBI are and the fact that the unit can easily be maintained and adjusted without taking off covers or dealing with proprietary controls.  Click on the smaller thumbnails below to see the neat and organized control panel up close, and notice the RM7800 Series control not typically found in highly proprietary copper fin units such as Lochinvar, Laars, Raypak or the new comer to the copper fin field, Camus!  Also note the standard Honeywell components, limits, and trim.  Most available over the counter at local wholesalers!
