Baldwin Wallace has been a long time user of cast iron boilers. While they have enjoyed the longevity of cast iron, they were looking for a solution that offered them a higher efficiency. Typical high efficiency boilers are copper fin or stainless steel. The KN boiler is a true cast iron sectional boiler with no minimum return temperature. The boiler is designed so it resist thermal shock (20 year warranty against thermal shock), has the longevity of standard cast iron sectional boilers (10 year warranty on the sections), and yet performs like the highest efficiency boilers in the industry (up to 98%).
The KN boiler also offered a fairly simply installation. The boiler is designed to be very forgiving as to flow (10:1 flow turndown), and also did not require any primary secondary considerations. The KN design is a non-proprietary design incorporating standard components such as the Honeywell RM7800 Series flame safeguard, Honeywell aquastats, and standard gas pressure switches and other safety devices. As we reviewed the boilers on campus, we found most the same components on their existing equipment making spare parts easy to stock.
We were also able to easily incorporate their existing controls into the design of this boiler. The KN Series boiler offers multiple T to T circuit contacts and accepts a modulation input of 4-20Ma. The venting was small, so we were able to easily design the vent system (Schebler) to travel through the existing masonry chimney without the use of fans or automation.
